WIP Playing around a little. Tried to make the Forbidden Planet letters humongous and have the ship nearly land on top of you. Kinda cool. I also did my own credits In 360. I'm using forbidden planet and Blade runner to figure out how to do drama and action in VR/360. Thinking of doing my next scene with Robby or maybe in Morbius house I got some great models off 3D WarehouseAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12733133413723355455noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7413543133796902336.post-91286686109697720152016-11-19T16:55:00.000-05:002016-11-19T16:55:51.216-05:00

Nature vs. Intelligence – What's the confusion?
hear on youTube

Many atheist like to point out and argue the apparent un-intelligence of our universe, and indeed that is incredibly easy given the diversity and opportunistic nature of evolution. The problem with this approach is that it misses the big point. Embedded in the Creationist argument is the assumption that nature and god could be confused; that evolution and the acts of the creator some how look the same. That the forms they produce and the apparent methods they used would appear so close to each other that millions of scientist over the past 150 years of looking into where we come from would have missed those nuances in the physical record that would have proved there was a creator. Logically this makes no sense since there is nothing connecting the two realities except of course the need by the believer to fit their intelligent designer in to the constraints of the real world.

The reality is, the forms intelligence and nature produce and especially the methods they use would have almost nothing in common and it should be nearly impossible to justify one from the evidence of the other. Some of the key traits that come with intelligence is that it's actions and therefore it's creation will have a well defined purpose, which will incorporate optimization, and to what ever extent inherent in the intelligence, it will not be constrained by the limits of the physical/natural world. Looking around us we generally know what is natural and what is made by the only known intelligence in the universe, us. More over the more technologically advance we become the easier it is to tell us apart. I am always amazed by how much we can tease out about the intelligence of our ancestors as far as how they made their tools and habitats. Simple patterns that are not probable in nature cue us to the presents of intelligence. When our earliest ancestors made the first stone tools they left not only the tools but also a pattern of stone flakes that let us know it was not a natural occurrence. As our technology has increased the evidence of our presence has grown and become more obvious. Roads, farms, cities, factories, parks, gardens, water works, sewage system, power infrastructure, jet contrails, dams, mines, oil wells, etc.: they all create patterns against the landscape that is easily identifiable as from an intelligence. Even on the very small, our intelligence leave very identifiable patterns at a molecular level in our materials and alloys, our electronic circuitry, our industrial and commercial chemicals, the purity and make up of the water we drink, and even the genetic make up of the life around us. These patterns we make, especially when compared to the natural world, speak of forms specific constructed and deposited to do our purpose, and show none of the evolutionary forces that act on the natural world. It would be strange indeed to think that at some point along our evolution and technological progress, all traces of our intelligence and purpose will merge back into the chaos that is nature.

Even when our purpose is to make something look like nature we only maintain it at a very superficial level which only goes as deep as it needs to fool those intended. More importantly even when intelligence tries to make something appear natural, the components will still have a function or purpose and many times will have components that are there specifically to counter the natural processes that cause things to change in the wild. Moreover if the creator had purpose like wanting us to believe in him or just know he exists, we would see it everywhere and it would not be hidden. Should see signs that have optimization beyond what would show an evolutionary benefit. You should see optimization for the creators benefit. Intelligence would not be limited to lineage like nature. You should find features that transcend a single lineage and bridge unrelated species. Intelligence would not find multiple ways to solve the same problem, it doesn't need to. Intelligence tends to find the best way and use it, over and over. You would not expect there to be multiple types of eyes doing the same function meeting the same need, but genetically unique. If there was no macro evolution then you should see the hand of the intelligent creator, plain as day in every creature we genetically map. If there was a creator, science would be categorizing all life, not by the common traits handed down generation to generation but by the assortment of genetic code and common components that form a unique combination of each animal.

If there was a creator you should not see any genetic lineages in that each genome would be its own standard type and traceable through other species regardless of any other traits are shared. A creator would also want to minimize the impact of evolution. If he created something perfect, the last thing he would want is to have it morphing all over adapting to new situations. So you would not see mutations or even the viral markers we use for dating. You would expect, events and structures that lead to genetic variability would be minimized. To this end you would think an intelligent creator would not need 2 sexes. Although 2 sexes is absolutely essential to the evolutionary process, they serve no purpose if we were created. Why would god need such variation, If humans where self impregnating, they wouldn't need orgasm and mating rituals and you wold eliminate porn and rape and all sex related sin. Admittedly the notion of sexual reproduction is so ingrained in us that no religion will even begin to question why 2 sexes but if you were designing us from scratch wouldn't one be easier or for Christians wouldn't 3 be more relevant.

Beyond our evolution, you should also see the signs of intelligence in the formation of the universe and throughout all of physics. The evidence of Gods purpose should be everywhere. If he created the universe for our benefit you would not expect a big bang or even a full fledge universe a we have. Actually what you would expect is pretty much what, the ancients thought it was with crystal spheres and all that, a small cozy universe that more resembled a zoo than the universe we see.

Now I know many of you are saying that fact that we can understand the universe at all is evidence of gods intelligence. But that statement exemplifies a lack of understanding of what science is and how our own problem solving abilities work. Humans find a way to understand what ever is there, that's all science is. If god and related supernatural phenomenon existed then you would expect science studying the peculiar way that physic interacts with life and more specifically the human brain to support formation of a soul or spirit. Or your mental health would be measured thru an MRI like device to determine how your mind interactions with your soul, or you would be able to validate that someone actually talked with god or ghosts or whatever, or the workings of miracles and all supernatural phenomenon would be just another part of physics. If god existed and interacted the way theist claim you would expect to see it in not some subtle way but in a grand way.

In my video, My Proof God does not Exist! Part 1, I talk more about what you would expect as far as physical evidence of god if he existed.

If there really was a god what would you expect? Well for one thing, I would have expected that science would have validated the existence of god and related supernatural phenomena by now. Now don't take this as some pompous scientific hand waving. You don't have something that interacts with our bodies and minds and not have some obvious impact in the physical world at least at the molecular/atomic level. The problem is that if god existed in the way most theist tend to imply, you would not expect it to be some weak subtle influence but something rather spectacular and widespread, at least as compared to our current understanding of subatomic particles and quantum mechanics.

I know many theist say wait a minute “you can't know gods nature”, “god is beyond our understanding,” and “god is supernatural, "beyond nature.” Why? Most of the things we know of science would have been consider supernatural a few hundred years ago. Sort of by definition anything we cannot directly or indirectly measure or test, we would have to classify as supernatural. But what we know is not constant, it builds upon itself. Especially under science, mankind has been able to come to an understanding of a substantial portion of his environment. I would have guest that the existence of supernatural events happening in the natural world would have become obvious to science in the last 100 years. I can already hear some of you saying, we will never be able to figure out god. But that I suspect is just wishful thinking among many of you theist because you know that through knowledge comes resolution and answers to question too many people say they already have the answer. The problem with believing in the supernatural it still takes its impact on the natural world for you to know it exists. Even if all we can see is the results like molecules moving, chemical process initiated, and electrical energy transfered, we should be able to observe, measure, and test it in a scientific way. Moreover how it impacts at the subatomic level should give us incites into how it relates to our universe and our more conventional physics. With our human capacity to understand and some physical evidence to work from we could determine the nature of heaven if it existed.

So lets look at the soul or spirit. Just about every mythology claims we have some part of us that is persistent after death whether if goes to heaven or is reincarnated in another life it is supposed to be some part of us. Many a Cristian claim the soul is actually where our consciousness lies but I doubt very few have ever thought through what that really means. Unless the soul is completely passive (only reading what or mind thinks and does), the soul must be able to interact and mostly create thought within our body independent of the rest of our neurological system. But thought is not a simple electronic signal like some piece of a computer program. Unlike computers, the brain is not some fixed set of processors in which instructions are inputted and process. No two brains are exactly the same. The brain grows its processors (brain cells) as the body grows (I.e. brain cells (grey matter) continue to grow up to late teens and the interconnectivity (white matter)until early 30s) and as such are influenced by the experiences of the human. Sensory inputs (touch smell sight, taste, hearing) are physically mapped into areas of the brain's grey matter multiple times and memory and thought are also similarly distributed. Moreover there does not appear to be a common language or operating system as in computers but rather the electro chemical interactions and physical structure of the brain are what defines the contextual and relational aspects of our thoughts. For the soul or spirit to interact with the mind it would have to be able to interpret the neurological signals and translate them into meaningful representation the soul understands. And conversely, the soul needs to be able to take what ever thoughts/ command/ memories it wants to send back to our bodies and map them back into the chaotic structures which is our brains. While there are potentially learning methods that could do this, but from a design point of view its not very intelligent. More significantly to my argument, from an interface point of view, it would be humongous. If the soul was in communication with the brain on any continuous manner the amount of information and energy should be spectacular on the molecular level. The brain should be saturated with these soul to body messages and they would all appear to come out of nowhere. And with each and every thought generated by our consciousness, we should be able to see a change in the physical universe that can't be explained by our current science. Now some may say “well quantum mechanics is pretty strange, maybe thats where the interactions of the soul lies” but in all our research we have never been able to find a quantum level effect that is associated with life let alone intelligence. There is nothing in science that would imply that there is any type of interaction able to support a soul and based on what we currently know we probably should have discovered it if it existed.

Another thing that the concept of a soul does very poorly is predict how the damage mind works. If our consciousness were in the soul then why would physical damage to the brain change our conscious mind? How could mental activities ever just stop if the soul is constantly talking to it and generating thoughts?

Much like the soul, many other things we call supernatural would have a very distinct physical impact on our world. Things like ghost, psychic abilities, miracles, stigmata, talking in tong, etc. would all leave some physical trail that physics should be able to find. People claim that they see, hear, feel and even witnessed physical manifestation (stuff moving and breaking) by ghosts but there claims and evidence is always lacking. I'm not talking about the kind of bogus electro-magnetic interference effects that they show on TV ghost hunter show. We live in a world saturated with electro-magnetic interference effects but we have always been able to identify a source in the real world if you look hard enough. If their claims were true and ghost really did exist and generate EMI, then ghosts being mobile and intelligent would almost universally play havoc with all the electronics. Electronic chips would have to be ghost proofed for them to be reliable and we should be able to easily detect them.

More significantly since ghost are supposed to be humans and you would expect that they would be trying to communicate with us just as some of us claim to try to talk to them. Wouldn't you expect some nerdy ghost to writing their name across the CCD collectors (the electronics that records light) in telescopes, day after day. Don't you think some enterprising ghost would be sending its images through television signals rather than just the cameras of ghost hunters.

If these supernatural realms existed and had some interaction with our universe, science would know it and be studying it. If they existed, there would be new formal branch of science pulling together physics, biology, cosmology, genetics, and others to come to understand it. You would have large research project looking at how the humans interact with this supernatural world their souls on a subatomic level, examining the intricacies of how our physical bodies communicate with the soul, how much energy is transfered back and forth between the gods dimension/realm/state and ours in the process, what is the make up of this other realm, gods, angles, demons, souls ghost, etc. and what is the nature of this relationship (parasitic/symbiotic) , how did it physically come into being, did god actually create it or did he just build upon what was already there. You would expect physicist would be trying to develop super unified theories in which they try to work out how the physic in god's realm relates to our own unified theories and their would be a whole discipline of science trying to determine what god was up to, his intentions, and desires. If there really was a god it would be scientist leading way to understand gods nature but that is not the reality we live in.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12733133413723355455noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7413543133796902336.post-41443271189648854262011-10-15T19:21:00.000-04:002011-10-28T21:30:47.377-04:00Population Weighted History

The article got me wondering how the data would look if you plotted it along a population weighted year (PWYr) time scale.
(NOTE: this idea seems quite simple and obvious, so I suspect someone has done this before, but I could not find it.).

So what is a PWYr?
A PWYr is a measure of time based on the number of years lived collectively by a population over some long time scale (i.e. where population is changing dramatically). It turns out that a PWYr is equal average population over a reference period. A table of PWYr shift the years such that it creates a corresponding date within the reference period that assumes a constant population over that period.

So whats good about it?

The interesting thing is that change especially for technology, knowledge, and research driven endeavors like economics, science, longevity, communication, etc. should be at least in part proportional to the number of people living. In other words, for any society, the more people there are, the more that can contribute to change, and so the faster the change appears. I came up with the notion of a PWYr a few years ago and always thought it would be an interesting way to watch change over the centuries.

So what does it look like?
To see what a Population Weighted Year looks like, I used World population data from Wikipedia to calculate roughly how many years lived over each of the population intervals. I then summed the total years lived and divided by the total period covered to get the average population, which is also the number of years lived in a population weighted year. When I took the period from 0 CE to 2010, I get:

1 PWYr (0-2010) = 603,902 years lived

From there is is simple to calculate the equivalent date in PWYrs for each interval which I have calculated in Table 1. You may ask Why 0 to 2010? I was trying to look at the time line from roughly to day and so 2010 was the closest date to today.

Table 1: Calendar year vs Population weighted Year (PWYr) based on the average population (603902890) from year 0 to 2010. Therefore, 1 PWYr is equivalent to 603,902,890 years lived by the world population. The data came from Wikipedia World Population Estimates article.

A couple of the things to note from Table one:
1. The early Roman empire is about halfway (remember this is to say years lived) between today and the earliest civilizations.
2. In 0 CE it was about 2 calendar years for every PWYr while today is about 10 PWYr for every 1 calendar year.

So with PWYr table in hand I went back to the economics graph shown above and tried to see if I could plot it on a PWYr Scale. So doing my best to count pixels and color values I tried to recreate the data. Since PWYr is inherently proportional to population I figured that what I needed from the graph is only the ratio between the economic output and the population. I also assumed the 21st century was just till today and assumed equivalent to 2010. Figure 2 is my plot of the data for the Economic Output as a percentage of output per percentage of population versus the equivalent PWYr for the average calender year for the period listed (i.e. going from points right to left they a for calendar year 2005, 1950, 1850, 1750, 1650, 1550, 1350, 1150, 950, 50).

Figure 2: Economic Output vs Population Weighted Year

My first reaction was WOW, that's interesting.

I had wondered if there would be any pattern but if this represents anything real it looks like that the growth rate of output took a significant step around the late 19th early 20th century.. maybe the event that triggered it, is the singularity equivalent to the big bang...maybe not. Admittedly this data is real rough and if we looked at it on a finer detail especially for the 20th and 21st centuries it is likely to tell as very difference story. I hope somebody posts the supporting data in more detail.
As I said above I originally thought of this as an interesting way of looking at the history and so created a table of various technological events and calculated their corresponding on PWYr time scale (Table 2). Note the dates for the events are most taken from various technology timeline mostly on Wikipedia and I make no claim as to their accuracy. I also tried to color code different types of data (key at top).

What is the significant of this, don't really know other than it gives a much more leisurely pace to technology. There are some very interesting progressions but I'll let you find your own.
Per the video description:

"Sita Sings the Blues" is based on the Hindu epic "The Ramayana". Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina Paley is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by email. Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Ramayana. Set to the 1920's jazz vocals of torch singer Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as "the Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told." It is written, directed, produced and animated by American artist Nina Paley.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12733133413723355455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7413543133796902336.post-83229355780600024492011-07-24T09:25:00.000-04:002011-07-24T09:25:46.624-04:00Covers of the Week - What Becomes of the Brokenhearted (Jimmy Ruffin)What Becomes of the Brokenhearted is a classic Motown R&B in this 1966 hit for Jimmy Ruffin (playlist) and there are some ereally great covers of the years.
For something differenct, I'll start off with a version by Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo but not the original but a very nice slightly different acoustic version

Da Rules (a work in progress)
1. I hold no truths to be absolute and no absolutes to be true. (No Absolutes Rule)
2. I hold no truth to be self evident. (No Free Ride rule)
3. I hold no belief on anything for which we humans know nothing about. (No Making Shit up rule)
4. I hold no humans can truly know or even imagine anything infinite and reality seems to concur. (Nothing infinite matters Rule)
5. I hold no abstractions to be real except as they manifest their usefulness to the holder. (Usefulness of Abstractions Rule)
6. I hold no belief about others that I am not willing to apply to myself. (Play Fair Rule)
7. I hold no human like being is behind any aspect of our universe except our own actions. (Don't be Narcissistic rule)
8. I hold no delusion that humans are inherently logical. (Silly Humans rule)
9. I hold on to reality as tightly as I can. (Reality rules!)
10. I hold my pants up with a belt, most times. (Token Reality Rule)
11. Follow the evidence wherever it takes you (Prime directive)
12.Belief shapes Perception (Believing is Seeing)
13. Never be afraid to be wrong (but don't guess)
14. Be honest with yourself above all else.
15. Live within the bounds of human experience and not human imagination.
16. Define yourself by what you know and not what you don't know.
17. Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.
18. Worry and anger do nothing to improve a situation
19. All things in moderation especially moderation (seek balance over the center).
20. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, when you don't know what else to do.
21. Almost nobody sees themselves as truly evil or completely wrong.
22. Conspiracy is much rarer than incompetence in explaining the human state.
23. You've got to save a lot a butt if you want to get away with murder

Additionally I use
1.Occam's Razor - when faced with competing hypothesis that are equal in other respects, selecting the one that makes the fewest new assumptions.
2. Sagan Standard - Extreme claims require extreme evidence

At one point this was a couple of pages but in trying to simplify my beliefs, I have tryed to keep it to whats important.

Like most new songs, most of the covers tend to be done by fans and in Brono's original style but there are a lot of them and there are some really good performances. For those that don't know a mash-up is where multiple songs are are combined into one. Here is a link to my regular mashups playlist which I call Non-Linear Melodies. Tonight I've collected some of my favorite acoustic mash-ups and mash-up covers from my Organic Mashups Playlist on youTube.

Mashing up Umbrella and Singing in the Rain has been done multiple time by Jamie Cullum and Glee. My favorite version is by Sonnet its a little more tender and just a better covers.
This is a response to the youTube Videos: "Atheism is a Religion"...? by BionicDance and An Atheist Calls Atheism a Religion by GrapplingIgnorance.

When people argue about whether atheism is a religion or not, they are almost always arguing against 2 different usage (definitions) of the word atheism/atheist in society.

First off there is the classic dictionary definitions ... namely that atheism is the lack of a belief in god, the disbelief in God, and or the belief that god does not exist. As such it gives no other restrictions on the beliefs of atheists other than to say that they share a single belief about god. Religion or religious beliefs, on the other hand, is the set of beliefs and practices by which a person or group identify themselves or by others. Reality is atheism, theism, and agnosticism are really just a way we group or categorize a broader set of beliefs which can be typically sub divided into specific religions/religious beliefs. You would not claim that theism is a specific religion or religious belief. Even deists in general usage has a set of beliefs and share a common identity that defines itself as a religious belief. Under this definition atheism indeed cannot be a religion.

The second usage of atheists/atheism references the collection of people that call themselves atheist. People who use this definition tend to see atheism as more than just a group that shares a single belief but instead sees a community who share a whole suite of beliefs about skepticism, naturalism, science, and rational advocacy that dominate the popular atheist movement. While I have yet to see this usage in a dictionary, some atheists, most notably PZ Myers, do tend to advocate this usage. Moreover many atheist will chastise other atheists who stray from orthodoxy of their "atheism" especially as it relates to tolerance and support in various forms of nonsense. Depending on your definition of religion, you could easily argue that this group would constitute a religion or at least a set of religious beliefs in that they share a common set of beliefs, doctrine, and identity; and are loosely organized (all be it in a very decentralized manner) and have established and recognizable leaders and advocates.

Beyond just the issue of a definition of atheism I think part of the problem is that many people especially atheist tend to associate religion only with the big organized theistic religions probably because they are the most visible and offensive examples to us. As we human inevitably do, we want to assume that our beliefs are different from those we oppose on every level and so any trait or structure attributed to them is automatically excluded from ourselves. We tend to assume that it is the notion of religion and not the beliefs and practices of that religion that is the real problem. Religions or religious beliefs do not have to deal with god, mysticism, super naturalism, or any specific other piece of woo. More over religions do not have to be hierarchical, rigid, homogeneous, inflexible, self centered, and ignorant; even with in the theistic religions these characteristics vary substantially.

Now, many atheist using the dictionary definition like to argue that "atheism is not a religion" like "Stamp collecting is not a hobby" or that "baldness is not a hair color or hair style". Even though the conclusion in this argument may be true, (and much like the people they arguing against), the actual argument is definitely a false dichotomy. You actually can have non-stamp collecting hobbies and baldness is generally considered a hairstyle* and hair color is an attribute of hairstyle that is not applicable to being bald (much like a weave is not applicable to a crew cut). Religions or at least religious beliefs can actually be theistic, atheistic, or agnostic.

I would like to note that this whole debate springs from theist's claiming that "Atheism is a religion" and the atheist community's response to dismiss it out of hand with out really trying to address the claim. Theist argue that "atheism is a religion" in order to lump all atheist (and any others group they oppose) under a single banner and to say all your criticism of our religion is false because you're just like us. Despite this fact, when theist talk about "atheism" they almost always are talking about the people that they identify as atheists and not about the dictionary definition. This is because they don't care about the specifics of our beliefs except as it relates to something they oppose. So when we atheist give our standard "non-stamp" type argument, we appear to be playing a semantic game which does not address what they see as religious-like activities.

The other main problem influencing this debate is the whole issue of what the "atheist community" calls themselves. The reality is we call our selves atheist and lump all atheist into one group primarily because that is what theist call us and it fits nicely with our self identity as individuals and the fact that we have consisted mostly of individuals or small groups isolated within a theistic community throughout most of our history. It is only in the last 200 to 100 years with the advent of a science based out look on reality that the number of atheist have grown and only in the last few decades where we have become a distinct and visible community. The problem lies in that this distinct community of atheist although organizing under various names (atheist, skeptic, freethinker, secular humanist, etc.), the terms we use do not represent different set of beliefs and the term "atheist" is still generally considered the moniker by which we identify ourselves and our beliefs. At some point, as the numbers of atheist grow, the beliefs of the atheist community will fragment, diversify, and compete as all belief systems do and the need to differentiate ourselves will grow.

____________________

* e.g. Sinead O'Connor and if you go to get your hair styled/cut and you tell them you want it bald they will know what you mean.
Afterthought: A question for those who go by the Dictionary definition: when you think or talk about atheists do you mentally exclude none skeptical ones (Buddhist, New-ager, purveyors of assorted woo, etc.)?
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12733133413723355455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7413543133796902336.post-40362920858790405802011-05-15T18:45:00.004-04:002011-05-15T23:50:11.561-04:00Covers of the Week - Crazy (Seal)Released in 1990, Crazy by Seal (playlist) is an awesome song. If you believe that God exist and you're right, the odds are that you will not believe in the right god so your life time of servitude and debasement to a god will mean nothing since your ancestors picked the wrong god and you will be punished with the rest of the non believers.

If you believe that God exist and you're wrong, then you have wasted your life subservient to a being your ancestors made up, and all the bull shit you put up with was for nothing.

If you believe that God does not exist and you're right, then you are free to make the best of your life, share what you learn in life, and pass it on to the next generation.

And if you believe that God does not exist and you're wrong, the odds are that you will have the same fate as all those who believed in the wrong god (which should be most of them) but at least you tried to do the best you can.

If it made any difference to god if we believed in him, then it would seem quite reasonable that those who believed wrong would share the same fate. If god wanted us to believe in him, then we would know who the right god is... since everyone does not share the same belief about god, then you probably believe in the wrong one. In the end its a suckers bet to believe in god.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12733133413723355455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7413543133796902336.post-78981026582225983672011-05-09T00:13:00.002-04:002011-05-09T00:14:52.361-04:00Covers of the Week - Crazy (Patsy Cline)The Crazy Trilogy - First one up from 1962 is the truly classic and tender Crazy written by Willie Nelson (playlist) and made famous by Patsy Cline (Playlist).

In the early days, I was often brash and overly dismissive of those who espoused various, for lack of a better term, woo-woo beliefs. Over time I came to realize that I wasn’t really engaging in good skepticism but instead overt cynicism: I was simply adhering to a position and everything which didn’t automatically agree with that position got dumped into the proverbial dustbin. I’ve spoken with a number of other skeptics who agree that this is how they used to behave as well; it was almost as if I was so proud of my newly acquired “skeptical badge” that I wanted to go around bashing everyone who didn’t think like me over the head with it.

Now, from what I understand of human nature, we all do this sort of thing to a certain degree or another, but that fact doesn’t necessarily justify such behavior and it certainly doesn’t help to advance any sort of fruitful discussion.

Funny how our different experiences cause us to change in different ways and so what one person considers the natural progression through life, can be completely opposite to another persons experience.
Case in point, when I was young I was a lot more willing to accommodate and try to work within the beliefs of others in order to engage them. As I've gotten older I've become more cynical and much more dismissive and condescending of believers. My main reason for my current level of cynicism with believers is the realization over time that it is completely futile trying to engage them on a philosophical level and my efforts as a youth trying to accommodated and work within the beliefs of believers was a significant waist of my time.

Later Matt says:

And that’s where we have to ask ourselves an important question: should skepticism be something which we only use to insulate ourselves from the varied nonsense beliefs out in the world, or should we utilize the tools of skepticism to engage with those who think differently from us & do not necessarily share our worldview? I think the answer is “a little bit of both” – most all skeptics already do the former by default, but many are skittish about the latter. I think it is vital for us to emphasize the engagement of, for lack of a better term, “believers” in what I like to refer to as the Long Debate.
Matt then gives 2 examples of Engaging with “Believers” on a Philosophical Level: one a relative and the other a worker, and both of the engagements fail to accomplish anything. It might be interesting to ask what he thought he was going to get out of the engagements and what he thought might of been the outcome had he chosen not to engage but he just seems to imply that there was some goodness in it.

One thing missing in this article is the distinction between how we engage the public and how we engage on a personal level. The examples given are only the latter. I think most people including most young brash atheists, would agree that you can't be completely dismissive when working at a one on one level and indeed you need to be tactful and know your audiences to try to influence them. Admittedly how you figure out your audience and develop meaningful tactics for engaging people is a product of age and temperament, so our approach over the years is likely to change but that reflects little on the core beliefs themselves. Brashness and dismissive or even the desire to engage one on one are really just social attitudes and say nothing about ones fundamental beliefs like skepticism, atheism, or what ever.

But I would argue that how we engage individuals is almost unrelated to how we see our relationship to groups. While there is definitely a political need to engage groups of believers to identify common causes and interests especially as it relates to overcoming the more extreme and powerful among the believers, I do not believe we gain anything by limiting our rhetoric to not offend believers. Reality is that those who we would offend are most likely those who see no problem offending us and usually never even realize it. I have yet to find a group of believers that is accommodating to us non-believers. Our rhetoric, even by the Gnus, is no more vile and dismissive than any of the group we may want to engage. Moreover, our own rhetoric (like everyone else's) even when addressing the arguments of believers is really intended for self consumption i.e. for other skeptics, atheists and non-believers and to limit it would do our community a complete disservice.

Lastly, Matt seems to have the notion that if you aren't among those engaging, you are isolating yourself. While I will admit (as I suspect many among the Gnu) there is a part of me that would rather not deal with non-believers. Our rhetoric is not born of an intension intention to push believers away. Our tone and the occupational ridicule, mockery, scorn and venom is merely our attempt to convey our thoughts and attitude in as honest, direct, and admittedly entertaining manner we can for our fellow non-believers. We merely seek to tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth" as we see it.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12733133413723355455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7413543133796902336.post-52913020875755190282011-04-18T00:46:00.003-04:002011-05-28T22:38:37.210-04:00My Random Meme of the Week #3Have it read to you on youTube
Do we anthropomorphize inherently?
Have you ever noticed that everything "metaphysical" or "supernatural" ultimately is about we humans. Whether it be a an exaggeration of our abilities, a projection of ourselves as the cause for all things, or the insistence that everything is here to aid us. When we hear a strange noise, see something we don't understand, or feel something strange, it's just we humans in another form or human like beings (ghosts, spirits, angles, daemon sprite). When random events happen, good or bad, it must be because of some human like purpose or intent to reward or punish us (fates, destiny, Karma, luck) or because some human like being wanted it to happen (guardian angels, animal spirits, ancestors, demons, gods). When we look at our world an need to figure out how it works or how it got there, it can only be some super being with all the intelligence, purpose, emotions, and vanity of we humans that did it (God, universal consciousness, ). When we look into the heavens and play connect the dots, those pattern we imagine must have meaning and be meant for us humans (astrology). When some one dies, we know humans are indestructible and they are going to a better (or worse) place (heaven, hell, afterlife, Hates, Valhalla, nirvana,) or they will start a new (reincarnation). And it goes on and on. But Why?

In a past post, I suggested that we do it because that is how we fill voids of our own ignorance. Namely when confronted with the unknown or unexplained, we anthropomorphize. My strongest evidence is that supernatural beliefs are truly universal across all ancient human societies and indeed the evidence of super natural practices (cave paintings, human burial, statues) is sometimes used as an indicator of "modern humans". The rejection of the supernatural in atheism, naturalism, and skepticism has only become a significant social movement in the past few centuries as science and an rational way of looking at the world has become the norm. Even though the roots of rejection of supernaturalism go back to mans earliest philosophical origins, it is really only recently that we see it creeping into the domain of the common man. But this fact leads us to wonder on the broader question of why do we fill our voids in knowledge with ourselves? Why do we always tend to anthropomorphize what we don't know? And I don't really know.

Some time ago, I remember reading that some scientists hypothesize that our intelligence evolved so that we can better interact in a social environment and figure out who's doing what to whom. If this is so, then it occurs to me, that it could be possible that our brains evolved the ability to recognize human like activity , much like we evolved the specialized ability to recognize faces even when they are not there. Do we instinctively see the world through a narcissistic filter? Is it that human social interaction is the default model for us to explain things? Does some part of us, inherently recognizes human traits like intelligence, purpose, intent, motive, emotion, consciousness, etc. in activities and environments regardless of whether it actually includes humans? If we do, which traits and how does it work? I think it would be very important to find out if we do inherently anthropomorphize. If it can determine if we do, could allow us to tease out some of how our mind works and shed a little light on the artifacts of our earliest ancestors. More significantly the answers to these kinds of questions could help us find out why we believe what we do and maybe ultimately be able to over come much of the woo that infest human society. I tend to think that these questions are answerable and that there are sufficiently imaginative researchers out there to take on such a challenge. Mind you, If there similar research underway or if this is an old concept already studied and discarded, I'd like to know.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12733133413723355455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7413543133796902336.post-28598192853106261812011-04-17T05:21:00.001-04:002011-04-17T05:27:07.373-04:00Covers of the Week - Candy (Paulo Nutini)The problem with trying to find covers for relatively new songs is that they don't have time to be adapted to a variety of styles and genre. The covers you find tend to be a lot of acoustic and karaoke versions by fans trying to recreate a favorite song. There is nothing wrong with mimicking a great performance and many of them are very good, but from a listening to multiple covers point of view they get repetitive and admittedly I love a diversity of styles. But when you find a song with a lot of covers like todays cover, you quickly realize that this song is something special and the diversity of covers will come. I discovered Paulo Nutini's Candy while doing a generic search for "covers" on youTube and quickly fell in love with it. There are over a 100 covers and many of them are very good. The ones here are the ones I like the best and I hope you like them.

Stephanie deBruijn's was the first cover I found and love listening to it

Marina & The Diamonds (that her stage name, not her band) puts a little of her own vocal style into it

An interesting thing about many of covers is that they try to out do the vocal style and roughness of Paulo himself... including the ladies
Sometimes its funny what will reveal some inner truth about yourself and explain some of our quirkyness.

Well California Dreaming by the Mamas and Papas is one of my all time favorite songs. I have fond memories of walking to Jr. high school and high school in San Leandro, CA on many a cold, overcast, gloomy day and California Dreaming was my inner theme music. I felt one with the song as if it capture some quintessential part of me.

I really love the song in all its perfusion of versions and have more covers of California Dreaming (15) than any other song in my "Covers all around me ()" playlists. The real unusual thing about this song is that I would have more but this is the only song where I deliberately eliminated certain covers because they change certain lyrics. More specifically they change "I pretend to pray" to "I began to pray". Normally I don't mind slight variations in lyrics and if they are novel enough or fit well within the overall style and emotion of a performance they are a plus. But if I try to listen to one of these versions, I find that once they get to "I began to pray", I almost reflexively stop it or go to another song. And what is really, really annoying about these versions they include some absolutely wonderful and unique covers like Jose Feleciano, Bobby Womack, Eddie Hazel, and The FlashBulb. I did sort of assume that it was just an atheist thing but I like too many songs with much more overtly religious/spiritual lyrics for that to fully explain it. For years now I have noticed that I do this but never gave it much thought.

Then the other day after listing to uvurob's video mashup a few times, I found myself trying to find all the versions on his video to determine if they all had the right lyrics. My original justification was that I was curious if uvurob used only the "correct" versions. This was turning out to not be an easy task because links to the versions were not supplied and I was having to go down the list of California Dreaming covers to find them. At some point while searching thru endless covers, I realized that my quest to determine if uvurob's video used the correct lyrics was more than a curiosity but actually would impact my opinion about the video even though it did not violate my inner rule. By the time I realized this, I had gone through more than 140 versions of the song.

So I asked myself what was I doing or more importantly why was I doing it? To answer my question, I started trying to remember what was going through my head back in my youth when I remember the song so vividly. All I can remember is the feeling of oneness with the song. Mind you this was not a single event but happened periodically when the weather was cold and overcast from 7th grade thru most of high school and at the time I blamed it mostly on the weather. What I now suspect, is that the lyrics touched me much deeper than I ever knew.

A little background. To my knowledge I have never believed in god or any religious myths, even though I was raised a Roman Catholic. My disbelief was not due to any seen deficiencies or contradictions in the churches teachings, the influence of some person I admired, or some trauma that turned me away from it; I just never believed any of it was true. In fact my earliest memory on the subject is that in second grade I remember thinking "God is like Superman; good but not real". I don't remember having any animosity towards the church and participated in many of the church functions to include periodic mass, Sunday school and teen events. I did like many of the social functions and the music in folk mass was cool. I do remember in Sunday school thinking that studying the stories in the bible was a waist of time and that these guys are fooling themselves but I never really questioned it in class or talked about it to anyone. About the time I started high school going to church did begin to bother me and when I was a sophomore I came out of the closet, although be it mostly so I could sleep in on Sundays. Up until college I don't remember actually knowing anyone who called themselves an Atheist or even having any meaningful conversation about my beliefs. For me at the time, it was always just a given that I didn't believe any of what others believe. But I due remember feeling very isolated and alone.

I can't say for sure but based on my current behavior anomalies and my emotional state at the time, I suspect that the lyrics

I stopped into a Church
I passed along the way
I got down on my knees
and I pretend to pray

had captured some aspect of my life in a very real way to me. I now wonder if through the song I realized that I was not alone in my pretending my way through life. Or maybe it was just that it gave me something to identify with myself. Regardless I do feel that my inability to enjoy some versions of the song probably stems from that period in my life.

So does my figuring out why I can't enjoy some versions of California Dreaming mean I will be able to now despite their "incorrect" lyrics? How about adding them to my playlist? Not right now but given time and my love for many of those versions, I might be able to at some point.
